Sensitive Teeth - Blog Entry 12

Is eating ice cream or sipping a cup of hot coffee painful for you? The answer is a resounding “yes” for people who suffer from sensitive teeth. Many adults experience hypersensitivity when they eat, drink or touch their teeth. Fortunately, dentistry can offer simple and effective treatments for this uncomfortable condition.

Possible causes of tooth sensitivity may be:
Tooth decay (cavities)
Fractured teeth
Worn fillings
Gum disease
Worn tooth enamel
Exposed tooth root

If you have sensitive teeth, the first thing is to do an exam to find the cause. Next, we will talk to you about simple ways to reduce this discomfort at home, such as desensitizing toothpaste. In-office options to address clinical problems that might cause sensitivity include a fluoride gel to strengthen tooth enamel; a crown, inlay or bonding; a surgical gum graft; or a root canal.  Also keep in mind that proper oral hygiene can be the key to managing tooth sensitivity. Brush correctly and be careful not to over brush or use hard bristle toothbrushes.
Please contact our office at (651) 292-8457 or freischeldental@qwestoffice.net to discuss ways to put an end to this problem, or to ask us any questions about how to keep your gums and teeth healthy.

Digital X-rays - Blog Entry 11

Our office had updated our equipment to include digital x-rays a couple of years ago. This technology benefits our patients and the environment. We can use computers to help take, store, and send dental x-rays without using film or chemicals.
An x-ray can show many problems with the teeth, tissues, and bone that I cannot see just by looking in your mouth. Finding and treating dental problems at an early stage can save time, money, and discomfort. It also helps prevent more serious health problems. An x-ray can show:

Small areas of decay between the teeth or below fillings
Bone destruction from a tooth infection (such as an abscess) or a cyst
Bone loss due to periodontal (gum) disease
Developmental defects and some types of tumors
The effects of trauma
The position of unerupted teeth in children and adults

When the digital x-ray is taken, it is sent to a computer and can be seen right away. Because the images are stored on a computer, the dental office can print or copy digital x-rays.  Our office believes this technology gives you the most advanced, efficient, and convenient dental care available. If you have questions, please contact our office at (651) 292-8457 or email freischeldental@qwestoffice.net.

Take Care of Your Teeth - Blog Entry 10

The success of you having no cavities and healthy gums is mainly decided by how well you practice good oral care at home.
Brushing your teeth twice a day with an ADA accepted fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between your teeth once a day are both important. Patients often say that they just don’t have the time. You can clean between your teeth at any point in the day. It’s easier than ever thanks to the variety of products, such as, floss, tooth picks and water flossers.

Your choice of foods and beverages is another key to good oral health. Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks. A steady diet of sugary foods and drinks, including sports drinks, can ruin teeth, especially if you snack throughout the day.  When sugar is consumed regularly, the harmful effect on teeth can be dramatic. Once a tooth decays, the enamel does not grow back. The only option when decay happens is to see me to have the tooth treated.

Smoking or using tobacco in any form also harms your oral health. Not only do smokers have a higher risk for cancer and other life-threatening diseases, but tobacco use can also cause periodontal (gum) disease. If you smoke and you want to quit, we can talk about treatment options and decide on the best course of action for you.

By taking care of your teeth, eating a balanced diet and having regular dental visits, you can have a beautiful smile for life. For more information on this and other patient education topics, visit our practice website at www.freischeldds.com. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at (651) 292-8457 or send an email to freischeldental@qwestoffice.net.

Consequences of Delayed Treatment - Blog Entry 9

At one time or another everyone experiences busy times, scheduling issues, employment conflicts, insurance problems or monetary constraints, so I am providing this information about what may happen if you put off dental treatment.

Right now, your problem is easily treated. But if you wait, your problem may get worse. Possible effects of waiting too long may include:
More pain
More complex and lengthier treatment
Increased treatment costs due to more harm to mouth and teeth
Higher risks of infection or complications
Longer recovery time
Having to take more time off from work for treatment and recovery

To put it simply, an investment in dentistry now may save you discomfort, money and time in the long run. Please know that if you have money concerns about the treatment plan, our staff can work with you on a payment plan so you can begin the treatment you need.
We want to help you keep your teeth for a lifetime. Please call us at (651) 292-8457 or email us at freischeldental@qwestoffice.net if you have questions or want to schedule your treatment. We hope to see you soon!

Healthy Mouth, Healthy Body - Blog Entry 8

An increasing body of scientific evidence indicates that oral health and overall health may be associated. The bacteria and inflammation associated with severe periodontal (gum) disease  have been linked to a variety of health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

In order to avoid developing periodontal disease, make sure you follow these guidelines:
Brush your teeth well twice a day.
Use an ADA accepted toothpaste with fluoride to help prevent decay.
Choose products with the ADA’s Seal of Acceptance.
Clean between your teeth daily with floss or another interdental cleaner.
If you need extra help controlling plaque, we can discuss the use of an ADA accepted, anti-microbial mouth rinse.
See me for regular dental appointments.

Please call to make an appointment so I can check your teeth and gums. You can reach me at (651) 292-8457 or freischeldental@qwestoffice.net.

Dealing with Dental Anxiety - Blog Entry 7

For some people, visiting the dentist can be stressful. It is estimated that 35 million adults have anxiety at the thought of an upcoming dental visit and end up delaying their appointment. At Michael Freischel DDS, we want you to know that we understand this anxiety and want to make your visit as pleasant as possible.

Here are a few tips to help you relax before and during a dental treatment:
Tell your dentist and the dental staff if you feel fearful, tense, or anxious. Talking about your fears can help your dentist tailor the treatment and pace to suit your needs.
Try to make your dental visit for a time when you won’t be rushed. You may find a Saturday or early morning appointment less stressful than rushing to see the dentist directly after work.
Get a good night’s sleep the night before and eat light meals the day of your appointment.
Wear loose, comfortable clothes to your dental appointment. Avoid wearing tight collars or clothes that will restrict your movement.
Arrange a signal ahead of time with the dental staff, such as raising your hand, to let them know that you are feeling discomfort or need a break from a procedure.
Bring some music to listen to during your treatment.
Try visualization. Focus on a relaxing scene from a favorite vacation spot and keep it in your “mind’s eye” during the visit.

Please talk to me about medications that are available to help create more relaxed, comfortable dental visits. The type of procedure, your overall health, history of allergies, and your anxiety level are considered when determining which approach is best for your particular case.
Again, our number one goal is to provide you with gentle, quality dental care. Please feel free to contact us today at (651) 292-8457 or freischeldental@qwestoffice.net to make an appointment.
